Meet Dr. John Munro

John Munro

John Munro serves as Bible Teacher for Back to the Bible as well as Senior Pastor of Calvary Church in Charlotte, NC. Before being called into full-time pastoral ministry, John practiced law in Scotland as a criminal prosecutor. He holds Master of Theology and Doctor of Ministry degrees from Dallas Theological Seminary. He and his wife, Gudny, reside in Charlotte, NC.

Q&A with John:

BttB: Tell us about your family.

JM: I'm married to Gudny who comes from the Faroe Islands, located in the North Sea, between Iceland and Norway. Gudny's native tongue is Faroese which is similar to Icelandic. She also speaks Danish. We met in Scotland when she was on a mission trip.

We have one son, Christopher, who is is married to Ashley, and they have 3 children: Alex who is 5, Ian who is 2, and Kera Grace who is almost one year old.

BttB: Talk about your boyhood.

JM: I was born and raised in Scotland where I had the privilege of being brought up in a very strong and godly Christian home. Like many boys in Scotland, I was an avid soccer player, so when I was twelve years old I went to a soccer camp -- a Christian soccer camp where I made a personal commitment to Jesus Christ. That was a long time ago, but obviously I have never regretted it. It was, for me, the beginning of being a disciple.

BttB: What is your ministry background?

I didn't start out in full-time ministry. Rather, I practiced law in Scotland for 11 years; first as a prosecutor, then as a partner in a private law practice where I headed up the litigation department. But, God called me from law to grace. Following that call, my wife Gudny and I sold our home, everything we had in Scotland, and moved to the United States where I attended Dallas Theological Seminary. Since then I've served as Senior Pastor in churches in Pittsburgh, Nova Scotia, Michigan and presently in Charlotte, NC.

BttB: Tell us about your current church and role as Senior Pastor there.

JM: Calvary is a large independent church with a Sunday attendance of more than 4,000. I have served there for seven and a half years and will continue serving as Senior Pastor as I take on the additional role of Bible Teacher for Back to the Bible. My main responsibilities are preaching and teaching, leadership and vision, and shepherding the flock. I also teach the new membership course and am involved in one-on-one counseling whenever I can.

BttB: What excites you about the role of Bible Teacher at Back to the Bible?

JM: My passion in life is to glorify God through the exposition of His Word. That is why I am so excited to be part of the Back to the Bible team, to tell people how to grow in the Lord through biblical engagement!

How has the Bible changed your life?
The Bible led to my salvation and directs my life every day.

Talk about your personal Bible study:
I study the Bible every day reading it right through as well as studying particular passages. So I study it extensively and intensively.

Favorite Bible passage and what it means to you:
My favorite passage is John 3 as it presents the necessity of the new birth, and also the Gospel in verses such as John 3:16.

What is one book you've read that has impacted you? Why?
I am constantly reading, but one book that impacted me as an older teenager was the Memoirs and Remains of Robert Murray McCheyne by Andrew Bonar. It challenged me to put Christ first in my life as it showed what one young man could accomplish whose life was committed to Christ.

When you have a day off, how do you like to spend the day?
I like to spend it with my family or head for the beach!

Interesting or funny fact about you:
I am one of six sons and have no sisters. I spent three of my teen years living in Gibraltar.

Favorite quotes:
"I believe God made me for a purpose, but he also made me fast. And when I run I feel His pleasure."
--Eric Liddell, Chariots of Fire

Favorite food: I can eat just about anything other than peanut butter (an American obsession I have not embraced!). I love Indian food.

I love to travel, spend time with family, history, and British football ( soccer).

What is a fond memory you have from your childhood days?
Fond childhood memory is spending my summer vacations at my grandparents who lived in a small fishing village in the north of Scotland. I fished, swam, played on a beautiful beach, climbed cliffs, went on fishing boats, played football (soccer), visited relatives.

Where have you lived?
I have lived in many different places and cultures. I attended six different schools from first grade through 12th grade, and since married have lived in 14 different houses.

"It has been my privilege to have known Dr. John Munro for some 30 years now. My wife Barbara and I have sat under his excellent Bible teaching with thousands of others at the well-known Calvary Church in Charlotte, North Carolina, for many years. It has been pure joy to hear his faithful and articulate exposition of the Word of God whenever he steps into the pulpit. I cannot think of a better choice by Back to the Bible than Dr. Munro to share the privilege we have had with the rest of the world."
--Dr. Norman Geisler, Renowned Christian Apologist

"What people want in a Bible teacher is someone who knows the Word, communicates it clearly, makes good application, and then lives what is preached. I have known John for over 30 years, going back to Scotland. This is what he gives you: solid Bible teaching, clear messages, wonderful application and a life to match, It is a joy to commend him for this ministry."
--Darrell Bock, Professor at Dallas Theological Seminary

"I heartily recommend Dr. John Munro, as he will rightly divide the Word of Truth and will do it effectively. John is a man of the Word, and a man of great wisdom and understanding. The ministry of Back to the Bible will grow and prosper under his leadership in the days to come. Please rest assured of my continued interest and whole-hearted support in every way. I am particularly excited for the opportunity the listening audience will have to get to know his teaching ministry, insightful interpretation and application of the Word. John is greatly gifted in this area. What a joy to share his gifts with a broader audience around the world through Back to the Bible."
