This Week's Reading Schedule

Monday

Today's reading: Exodus 9

Questions for thought:
In the plague of the flies (Exodus 8) and now the livestock and hail, God is making an important distinction: What is it and why does He do this? What does God have to say to Pharaoh about his heart and attitude (9:15-17)? What is Pharaoh's response this time (9:27-28)? How do you see this changeable attitude reflected in people today?

Tuesday

Today's reading: Exodus 10:1-20

Questions for thought:
The cycle of Pharaoh's hard heart, plagues and his changing mind continues but now his servants weigh in; what do they have to say? What conditions does Pharaoh try to impose? After the plague, Moses was asked to intercede for Pharaoh before God; what does this tell you about Moses? Have you ever had to pray for your enemy?

Wednesday

Today's reading: Exodus 10:20-11:10

Questions for thought:
With the plague of darkness, it seems like God didn't even give Pharaoh a warning; what's different this time? How is God still caring for His people in these difficult days? God promises a last plague; put it in your own words. What does God say is His reason for hardening Pharaoh's heart (11:9)? Why might this be important?

Thursday

Today's reading: Exodus 12:1-32

Questions for thought:
Outline the steps the Israelites were to take to prepare for the last plague and leaving Egypt. What does God instruct them to do in the future? What was the reward for obedience? The punishment they could expect for not obeying? What was Pharaoh's word to Moses?

Friday

Today's reading: Exodus 12:33-13:16

Questions for thought:
How do you see God providing for His people as they escape from Egypt? What do you learn about God keeping His promises from 12:40-42? God sets up three important ceremonies or statutes for His people; what are they? What do they signify?

Saturday

Today's reading: Exodus 13:17-14:31

Questions for thought:
As you read this, forget the movies and imagine being part of this refugee camp. What would you learn about God from the cloud and the pillar of fire? Would you trust or complain when the Egyptian army threatened you? How do you see God fighting for His people? His justice in action? Moses has strong words for the people (14:13-14); do you need that reminder for a situation you're facing today?

Sunday

Today's reading: Exodus 15

Questions for thought:
This is the first worship song recorded in the Bible; where is the focus? What does it say about God? You'll also find the beginning of a new cycle in Exodus: Great moments followed by grumbling moments; what's the cause here? What do you think is the root problem with this cycle? How often do your complaints come from forgetfulness?
