A Loving Partnership

in Christian Living/Situational Family/Parenting Marriage Obedience/Discipleship Relationships

Wives, in the same way be submissive to your husbands so that, if any of them do not believe the word, they may be won over without words by the behavior of their wives, when they see the purity and reverence of your lives. 1 Peter 3:1-2

Today's passage is found in a chain of instructions aimed at our response to governing authorities and those who supervise us in the workplace. Here Peter moves to the home and begins with the wife's role.

Echoing the words of the apostle Paul, Peter reminds each woman that she is to honor the role of leader that God has given each husband in the marriage relationship. She is to voluntarily and willingly place herself under the leadership of the man. This in no way describes a "doormat" mentality or a "slave/master" relationship. It does describe the "government" of the home that God has assigned and ordained. Marriage is a loving partnership with the man given final accountability for the overall direction.

This role for the woman applies even when her husband is not a believer. As seen in the verses above, the compelling influence of biblical obedience may be the very thing that brings her husband to Christ. Such is the power of living life God's way.

Father, thank You for Your design of marriage. May each husband lead a loving partnership in a way that his wife desires to demonstrate honor and respect. In Jesus' name. Amen.
