Then the LORD spoke to Job out of the storm. He said: "Who is this that obscures my plans with words without knowledge? Brace yourself like a man; I will question you, and you shall answer me. Where were you when I laid the earth's foundation? Tell me, if you understand. Who marked off its dimensions? Surely you know! Who stretched a measuring line across it?" Job 38:1-5
Job had been through hell on earth. He lost his possessions, his children, and his health. Discouragement set in, and he began to question God's love. Finally, God responds. Quite honestly, I want God to come with tenderness and comfort. I admit that after all Job has been through, God's "Brace yourself like a man; I will question you, and you shall answer me" sounds a little harsh. Remember that the anchor we hold onto during difficult times is God's character. He is all-loving even when He tells us to "brace" ourselves.
In our passage today, God reminds Job why He can be trusted. He is eternal. There was never a time when He was not; there will never be a time when He is not. He is independent. He depends on no one or no thing for His existence. He didn't need Job to hold one end of the tape measure when He marked off the dimensions of the earth. He is the Creator. Whatever exists is created by and sustained by His gracious hand.
You see, God knew that the answer to Job's questions was not "Why?" but "Who?" When we understand that the "Who?" behind all our life is God, that knowledge translates into trust.
Lord Jesus, our prayer today is this: let our knowledge of who You are allow us to trust You every step of our journey. In Your name. Amen.
