Instruction to Husbands

in Christian Living/Situational Family/Parenting Marriage Obedience/Discipleship Relationships Service/Servanthood Speech/Words

Husbands, in the same way be considerate as you live with your wives, and treat them with respect as the weaker partner and as heirs with you of the gracious gift of life, so that nothing will hinder your prayers. 1 Peter 3:7

Peter's instruction to husbands is straight to the point. Let's break it down.

  • Be Considerate: A better translation here is "live with your wives in an understanding way." Always consider her needs before yours.
  • Be Respectful: This word describes something of great value; something that should be honored. Your wife is a valuable gift from God. Honor her as such.
  • Never be harsh: The phrase "weaker partner" refers to the fact that a woman is generally not as physically strong as a man. I believe Peter here is speaking directly to those who would in any way try to hurt or intimidate their wives. That is forbidden. Treat them with honor and as an equal heir of salvation.
  • Be clean before God: Men, when we neglect or abuse our responsibilities as a husband it is a spiritual issue. Disobedience disrupts our communication with God.

Peter's instruction is not complicated. Husbands must lead their homes, and they must lead God's way. Failure here ends in a broken family ... and a trail of broken hearts.

Father, I pray for each husband. May we be considerate in all our dealings with our wives. May we be respectful and value them as a gift from You. Never allow us to be harsh. Keep us clean before You and our channels of prayer clear. May we honor You in our marriages. In Jesus' name. Amen.
