Those whom I love I rebuke and discipline. So be earnest and repent. Revelation 3:19
Everyone enjoys the "hugs and kisses" love. No one likes the "rebuke and discipline" love. But just as hydrogen and oxygen produce water, both affection and discipline produce love. Here's an example.
When our children were little, we used to play in the front yard of our home. Sometimes they would wander too close to the road. When, after several warnings, this action was intentionally repeated, I occasionally gave a little swat and warned them of the danger. I disciplined them, not out of a lack of love, but because of love. The purpose of the discipline was repentance, which means to change your mind and direction. I wanted their knowledge of the danger, enforced by my discipline, to keep them out of a life-threatening situation.
God disciplines those He loves. His affection for His children runs too deep to let us live in danger. He doesn't want us in places that threaten our spiritual life. He doesn't want us headed down paths that lead far from Him. So, when you experience God's discipline, take it very seriously and change your mind and direction. And know this--you are a child of the eternal God and loved by Him.
Father, remind us even in Your discipline how much You love us. Help us to turn from any path that leads to destruction. In Jesus' name. Amen.
