"At that time your mouth will be opened; you will speak with him and will no longer be silent. So you will be a sign to them, and they will know that I am the LORD." Ezekiel 24:27
The phrase "They will know that I am the LORD" occurs 54 times in the book of Ezekiel. God works to get the attention of His people. Sometimes through tender encouragement, sometimes through discipline, God acts to show those He loves how much He loves them. When believers stray, God will not stand passively by and watch them walk away. He will get the attention of His children.
The Old Testament prophet was a vital part of the process. More often than not, the prophet spoke words of warning and impending doom. Many times prophets were rejected for speaking God's message. Often they were persecuted. But they did not retreat from their mission.
The sovereign God can do anything He wants to do anytime He wants to do it. But most of the time, He uses people in the process. Like the prophets, God gives us a message to share on His behalf. Sometimes it is a message of encouragement, sometimes warning. Sometimes we are called to comfort; other times we are sent to confront. Sometimes we are sent to speak to unbelievers about how to have a relationship with God. Other times we are sent to believers to give them words of spiritual instruction. When God opens our mouths with His message, we cannot be silent. We must share the truth God gives us so that people will know that He alone is the LORD.
Father, thank You for not standing passively by as Your children walk away. Thank You for entrusting us with the message of eternal life. When You open our mouths, may we speak clearly and boldly. In Jesus' name. Amen.
