101 Ways to Strengthen the Parent‐Child Connection

Devotions, Tips, and Activities

By Michael and Tiffany Ross

The LORD is my rock, my fortress and my deliverer; my God is my rock, in whom I take refuge. He is my shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold.

PSALM 18:2

Family Quest

Create a “verbal story” together. Tell your child to imagine herself trapped outside in a rainstorm. But then her daddy picks her up and carries her to safety. (Invite your child to fill in the details.) End the story this way: “He protects you in a warm, dry shelter while the storm passes. He knows what to do and when it is safe to come out.” Now discuss what you both dreamed up.

Talk It Out

· Who do you want to be with when you are scared?

· Do you ever pray during those times?

· Do you think that God, your heavenly Father, wants you to ask Him for help?

Parent-Child Connection

Consider reading all of Psalm 91, emphasizing verses 1–2: “Whoever dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the LORD, ‘He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.’ ” Another great passage to share is Matthew 7:24–27. There are two very important points that you should drive home with today’s lesson: (1) God is stronger than anybody or anything in the world. (2) God wants us to call out to Him when we are scared. . .and trust that He will protect us.

Talk to God

As you pray, encourage your child to (1) thank Jesus for always being there for us and (2) ask the Lord to help us pray when we are scared.
