101 Ways to Strengthen the Parent‐Child Connection

Family Quest
Grab a marker, tape a piece of white construction paper to your wall, and take turns listing all the different names we have for God. Here are a few to get you started: He is the Shepherd who guides (Genesis 48:15), the Lord who provides (Genesis 22:8), the Lord of peace during life’s trials (Judges 6:24), the Physician who heals the sick (Exodus 15:26), and the Banner that guides the soldier (Exodus 17:8–16). Add many more names to your list, and discuss how amazing it is that in spite of all the different ways we can describe our amazing Creator, they each refer to our one true God!

Parent-Child Connection
As you explore the many names of God, weave into the discussion three important faith issues that your child needs to learn: (1) Even though there is only one true God, He is triune. There are within the Godhead three persons—the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. (2) The work of salvation is one in which all three act together. The Father freely gives us redemption, the Son secures it, and the Spirit applies it. (3) The New Testament warns us to beware of misguided people who deny that Jesus Christ is the only way to eternal life. “I am astonished that you are so quickly deserting the one who called you to live in the grace of Christ and are turning to a different gospel—which is really no gospel at all. Evidently some people are throwing you into confusion and are trying to pervert the gospel of Christ” (Galatians 1:6–7).
Talk to God
As you pray, encourage your child to (1) thank Jesus for reaching out to us in so many different ways and (2) ask the Lord to help us understand all the things these names tell us about God.
