Run to the Rock

Read Psalm 18:1-3

I love you, O Lord, my strength. The Lord is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer, my God, my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield, and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold. I call upon the Lord, who is worthy to be praised, and I am saved from my enemies."

What does it mean that God is our rock?

King David knew who he could count on when he couldn't count on his family, his king, or any other earthly thing. He ran to the Rock. God is described in many ways in the Bible. One description is "the Rock." In the Bible, a rock represents the stability, power, invincibility, and immutable character of God.

King David knew that no matter what test or trial came his way, he could and should run to the Rock who wouldn't change. The Rock would protect him through the trial.

In Psalm 18, David is literally in the cleft of a rock watching his enemies march by. While in the protection of the literal rock, he prayed to God with confidence and with thanksgiving. David never denied the reality of the enemy or the scary trial. But he shifted his focus from the situation to the Rock.

What disappointments have you experienced recently? What hurt have you suffered from a trusted friend or family member? What trial are you experiencing that is causing you anxiety? Is it your health? Your finances? Your job? Your spouse? When your world seems to be falling apart, turn to the Rock, just like David. God will provide wisdom for the day, peace for the moment, and protection from the problems you are facing. He is your Rock. He won't fail you.

Lord, help me to turn to you first in my hardship. Help me to see your faithfulness. Help me to trust you in all my circumstances. Thank you for being my Rock. Amen.
