For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.
Family Quest
Place three items on a table: a loaf of bread, a toy sword (a picture will do), and a flashlight. Say something like this: “Believe it or not, these three things have something in common: the Holy Bible. God’s Word is described as “our daily bread,” “sharper than a sword,” and “a light that guides our path.”
Talk It Out
· How is the Bible like bread? (In other words, how is it like food that we eat every day?)
· How is the Word of God like a sword?
· How does scripture guide us on the right path—just like a flashlight? (If it’s dark out, go outside with a flashlight.)
Parent-Child Connection
Tell your child that the Holy Bible is much more than a relic of an ancient religion or a collection of mere words printed on paper. It’s unlike any other book ever written. Each chapter is packed with God’s power. Explain that as we receive His message, it’s as if the
Lord’s very breath of life is being breathed into us. Share these additional verses about scripture:
• “Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away” (Luke 21:33).
• “We also have the prophetic message as something completely reliable, and you will do well to pay attention to it, as to a light shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts. Above all, you must understand that no prophecy of Scripture came about by the prophet’s own interpretation of things. For prophecy never had its origin in the human will, but prophets, though human, spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit” (2 Peter 1:19–21).
Talk to God
As you pray, encourage your child to (1) thank Jesus for being so big and mighty and (2) ask the Lord to help him appreciate what He has done for him.
