What If...
Driving isn’t one of your favorite activities. When the traffic gets heavy or if the weather’s bad, you tense up.
On one particular day you’re taking us kids to a movie at one of the mall theaters. As you’re going down the freeway in the left-hand lane, you see that you need to take the next off-ramp. You take a quick look in your rearview mirror and move abruptly into the right-hand lane. Just as you do, the driver moving up on the right gives a long honk. Then he changes lanes and comes up on your left. As you’re moving into the exit lane you look over and he’s yelling at you and shaking his fist.
“I’m sorry, it was an accident,” you yell at the window though he can’t possibly hear you. “Chill out!”
When he sees you’ve yelled something back, the driver tries to get in behind you in order to follow you on the off-ramp.
Now you’re angry... and a little scared.
Questions to Think On
• If the other driver followed you all the way to the mall, what would you
do?
• Though you’re angry at how the driver responded to a mistake, what
would be the best course of action to take?
• Have you ever become angry at someone for making a mistake on the
road? How did you respond?
• To prevent an ugly situation or cool one down, what is the best course of
action?
