For in Scripture it says: "See, I lay a stone in Zion, a chosen and precious cornerstone, and the one who trusts in him will never be put to shame." 1 Peter 2:6
As he often does, Peter goes back to the Old Testament to make his point about Jesus. In today's passage, Peter cites Isaiah 28:16. Here he likens Jesus to the "precious cornerstone" used to build a secure and sure foundation.
In biblical times, large cornerstones were put in place to determine the integrity of the structure. One such stone, found by archeologists, measured sixty-nine feet by twelve feet by thirteen feet!* The rest of the building would be aligned to the cornerstone. Isaiah uses this picture to challenge people to build on the Lord, the One who is immovable and unchangeable. Peter's application of this passage follows: Jesus is the sure foundation, the "precious cornerstone." Whoever builds their life on Jesus will never be ashamed or disappointed. Their life will always be in line with the will of God.
Take a moment to prayerfully evaluate if you are building on the "precious cornerstone."
Father, I am tempted to build my life on many things. Today help me know for sure that my foundation is Jesus. In His name. Amen.
