What If...

This is what happened at our house:

It was the same routine every day. The Flemming mom and dad got up at 6:30 A.M. At 7:30, they awoke their two children. ‘Good morning,” they said. “It’s time to get ready for school.”

Matt and Mary got up, changed into their school clothes, ate breakfast and left for school. Dad and Mom went off to work in their separate cars. At 3:30, Mom came home from her job. As Matt and Mary arrived in the house, there was no warm greeting, only a snack.

“Time to do your homework,” Mom said. ‘Then you can watch TV until dinner.”

Dad arrived home at 6:00, and immediately dinner was served. But no one talked much besides saying, “Pass the salad, please.”

After dinner it was more TV and then time for bed.

“Brush your teeth,” Dad said. “I don’t want to spend all of our money on dentist bills.”

Matt and Mary obediently brushed their teeth, put on their pajamas and went to bed. An hour later, Mom and Dad went to bed, too.

This same routine happened day after day, week after week, month after month.

Questions to Think On

• Name five things that are missing from this family.

• What do you think is the biggest thing they’re missing?

• How do you feel when Mom and Dad don’t say “I love you?” How do you think we feel when we don’t hear it from you?

• How does God say “I love you” to us?

• What would it be like if you never heard God say he loved you?

What Does God Have to Say?

How great is the love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are! 1 John 3:1

This is how God showed his love among us: he sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through him. This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins. 1 John 4:9-10
