Peace for Tomorrow

Published 12/26/19

Read Philippians 4:7

"And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus."

Reflect

Why do some feel it's easier to trust a horoscope than it is to trust God?

There was a program on TV about United States presidents who were influenced by fortune tellers. Many presidents got daily astrological readings, and some took their dreams very seriously. For a person with such high responsibility and pressures, it's not too hard to see why they'd want a little guidance for the future.

There is an entire industry built on predicting the future. Nearly every newspaper prints a daily horoscope offering guidance. If you are interested in a certain person, you can find your astrological "compatibility" and discover what issues you'll likely face. Tarot card readers and fortune tellers are in every city. And for the kids, there are Ouija boards and Magic 8 Balls. Fortune cookies are free with your meal.

The reason we spend so much time and money on fortune tellers can probably be boiled down to one word: "Peace." We want a peaceful and stress-free day, or at least, the way to get out of a bad situation quickly.

If your horoscope tells you to expect conflict from a coworker, you know to be on guard at work. If it tells you a relationship will end in heartache, well, better to cut and run now.

But if peace is what we're after, why not turn to the one who's name is "Prince of Peace." Paul gives this amazing advice: "Don't worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need and thank him for all he has done. If you do this, you will experience God's peace which is far more wonderful than the human mind can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus" (Philippians 4:6-7, NLT).

Instead of going to fortune tellers, tarot cards and the like for future guidance, why not go to the eternal one who can actually see the future. Take your problems, concerns, fears, and thanks to God and He'll give you more than any human ever could.

So, can God really give you peace about your future? All signs point to "yes."

Pray

Lord, help me to handle the stresses I encounter each day. Help me to find peace and comfort in You. Amen.
