But we know that when Christ appears, we shall be like him, for we shall see him as he is. All who have this hope in him purify themselves, just as he is pure.
Family Quest
Cut an apple into two equal pieces. Soak one half in a water and salt solution for 15 minutes. Allow the other half to be exposed to light. During your family devotion time, stick the apple back together, hiding the inside. Hold it up and say, “Think about this apple as the inside of someone’s heart. One side has been polluted by the world; the other has been purified by Jesus.” Now expose the inside of the apple.
Talk It Out
· Like the brown side of the apple, what kinds of things can make us yucky on the inside?
· Like the side that has been “purified” in salt and water, how does God make us pure? (Examples: prayer, repentance, Bible reading.)
· Read Isaiah 6:5. What gives us confidence to stand before the Lord on judgment day?
Parent-Child Connection
It’s easy to see only the bad in the world. But that isn’t an accurate picture at all. This is the world that God made. There are signs and reminders of Him everywhere. But it is also broken by sin. Being able to discern between the good and the bad is sometimes difficult. This kind of discernment is the ability you are trying to instill in your child with this exercise.
Talk to God
As you pray, encourage your child to (1) thank Jesus for giving him a clean heart and (2) ask the Lord for help in living a pure life.
