Climb Higher: Handling Pressure

Read Hebrews 12:1-3

Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God. Consider him who endured from sinners such hostility against himself, so that you may not grow weary or fainthearted.

Reflect

· When the pressure is on in your life, where is your focus?

· Do you find yourself stumbling--even falling flat on your face--because you've become a flabby Bible student?

· Are your spiritual muscles weak and useless because of neglect?

The Bible often compares our Christian life to running a race. And to compete, the Scriptures instruct us to get in shape: "Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one gets the prize? Run in such a way as to get the prize. Everyone who competes in the games goes into strict training. They do it to get a crown that will not last; but we do it to get a crown that will last forever. Therefore I do not run like a man running aimlessly; I do not fight like a man beating the air. No, I beat my body and make it my slave so that after I have preached to others, I myself will not be disqualified for the prize" (1 Corinthians 9:24-27).

While prayer and Bible reading are essential ways of building spiritual muscle, here's another strategy that will help us "run" victoriously: Train with a friend. An accountability partner can talk you through a struggle or a temptation, help you kick a certain habit, and encourage you to stay on track with Jesus.

Pray

Lord, I so desperately need Your help handling pressure. Please bring a friend who can train with me. Amen.
