“The Least Of These...” For the Parent…

What If...

You are walking downtown with our family on a Saturday morning. There is a farmer’s market street sale every weekend where fruit and vegetables and other types of good food are sold. We go to it two or three times a year.

It is approaching fall and the weather isn’t all that warm. After we walk through the market a couple of times, we all decide to go to the pioneer museum a short distance away. On our way there we pass a park where some people dressed in old clothes are just hanging out. Some are seated, a few are lying down on the park benches. They look asleep.

“Who are these people?” I ask you.

“Those people are probably the homeless,” you say. “Each day they come here to be in the sun. When it gets dark they go someplace where they can sleep and stay warm—a shelter or mission or something.”

After taking our tour through the museum, we head back to our car. Walking by the park again, we see a mom sitting on the grass with two of her kids. The kids are crawling around and the mom is just staring into space.

Questions to Think On

• Can you think of anything to do for this mom and her kids?

• What do you think a Christian should do to help the poor and homeless?

• Have you ever thought about doing something for these people as a family?

• Why don’t we try to do more to help these people??

He who gives to the poor will lack nothing, but he who closes his eyes to them receives many curses.

Rich and poor have this in common: The Lord is the Maker of them all. Proverbs 22:2
