The Listening Type?

Published 9/4/19

By Greg Johnson

What If...

You are twelve again and living with your parents. You have just entered junior high and you enjoy getting older and becoming more independent. The only problem is you need your parents’ permission to do a lot of things.

For the following situations, answer these two questions:

1. What would your parents say about this? Why?

2. How do you feel about their advice?

· Going to co-ed dances or parties

· Spending all day with a friend in the wilderness (though not too far from your home)

· Watching movies that have a secular edge

· Talking to the opposite sex on the phone or “going with” someone

· Frustration with church events, groups or activities

· Wanting to stay up later or stay out later with friends

· Choosing classes

· Choosing friends

· Any other situations you can think of

Questions to Think On

• Were you the type to learn from other people’s mistakes, or did you have to learn the hard way?

• In what situations do you want me to come to you and obey your advice?

• In what situations do you want me to come to you and at least listen to your advice?

• What will you do if I don’t listen to your advice and I do what I want?

• What concerns you most about me growing up?

What Does God Have to Say?

If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to him. James 1:5

A wise son brings joy to his father, but a foolish son grief to his mother. Proverbs 10:1
