READ
1 John 5:18-19
18 We know that God’s children do not make a practice of sinning, for God’s Son holds them securely, and the evil one cannot touch them. 19 We know that we are children of God and that the world around us is under the control of the evil one.
Throughout the book of 1 John the distinction is made between just committing a sin and the practice, or lifestyle, of sinning. This is brought out in the original language of the Greek New Testament. The time element translated “practice of sinning” has to do with continuous action. Those who have believed in Jesus for salvation can take comfort that “the evil one cannot touch them.”
REFLECT Hebrews 1:6
Satan is referred to in this passage as “the evil one.” For the time being God has allowed Satan,
also called the “devil,” to have control of the world system.
RESPOND
When Satan tempted Jesus he offered Him the world if Jesus would bow down and worship him (see Matthew 4:8-10). Notice that Jesus replied that only the Lord your God should be worshiped and served. In this regard, read Hebrews 1:6 that reveals the heavenly Father saying that all the angels should worship Jesus. This is another indication that Jesus is God because only God is to be worshiped.
