READ
1 John 2:15-17
15 Do not love this world nor the things it offers you, for when you love the world, you do not have the love of the Father in you. 16 For the world offers only a craving for physical pleasure, a craving for everything we see, and pride in our achievements and possessions. These are not from the Father, but are from this world. 17 And this world is fading away, along with everything that people crave. But anyone who does what pleases God will live forever.
The believer is not to love the “world.” This word refers to the world system. One translation renders verse 16 about the things that are in the world as “the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life” (NKJV). These are not from the heavenly Father but are of the world system. Those things will eventually pass away, but the one who pleases God “will live forever.”
REFLECT
What attracts you most? Is it the things of the world system or the things of God?
RESPOND
The pull of much of the world today is for materialism; that which is seen and possessed rather than that which is not seen. With your disciple read Matthew 6:24 to see one cannot love God and money; and 2 Corinthians 4:18 that tells where the believer’s focus should be.
