READ
1 John 2:26-27
26 I am writing these things to warn you about those who want to lead you astray. 27 But you have received the Holy Spirit, and he lives within you, so you don’t need anyone to teach you what is true. For the Spirit teaches you everything you need to know, and what he teaches is true—it is not a lie. So just as he has taught you, remain in fellowship with Christ.
The apostle John warned believers not to be deceived by those wanting to lead them astray. He assures believers that the Holy Spirit lives in them to teach them what is true. When one hears something that sounds strange, that is an indication the Holy Spirit is indicating more information is to be sought. This enables one to stay in fellowship with Jesus.
REFLECT
Have you had someone tell you something that did not seem correct? This is an indication the indwelling Holy Spirit was indicating you should be cautious. Be like the Bereans as described in Acts 17:11.
RESPOND
Teach your friend how and where to seek information if something is heard that is suspicious. For instance, if your friend is told he needs someone to go between himself or herself and God, what would you say? You could give counsel and point the person to 1 Timothy 2:5-6.
