1 John 3:4-6
4 Everyone who sins is breaking God’s law, for all sin is contrary to the law of God. 5 And you know that Jesus came to take away our sins, and there is no sin in him. 6 Anyone who continues to live in him will not sin. But anyone who keeps on sinning does not know him or understand who he is.
“Sin” is defined here as anything “contrary to the law of God.” The word literally means “missing the mark.” The mark is God’s holiness. Jesus came to take away our sin and there is “no sin in him.” The apostle John refers to a lifestyle of sinning when he says anyone who lives in Jesus will not continue to sin. The continuous action is seen in the tense of the verb John used for “doing” sin so it is rendered “keeps on sinning.”
REFLECT
Think about your life and the fact that you do not want to go on sinning. This is an indication you have a personal relationship with Jesus and the indwelling Holy Spirit makes you sensitive to sin.
RESPOND
Talk with your friend about the desire to keep from sinning. The late Dwight L. Moody was known for writing in a Bible, “Either this Bible will keep you from sin or sin will keep you from this Bible.” How are you both doing in this regard?
