READ
1 John 3:9-10
9 Those who have been born into God’s family do not make a practice of sinning, because God’s life is in them. So they can’t keep on sinning, because they are children of God. 10 So now we can tell who are children of God and who are children of the devil. Anyone who does not live righteously and does not love other believers does not belong to God.
The one who has a personal relationship with Jesus does not have a lifestyle of sinning. This personal relationship is achieved by trusting in Jesus as Savior. Such a person is a child of God and does not want to dishonor him. Not everyone is a child of God; some are “children of the devil.” The devil’s children are not concerned about honoring God or about loving believers.
REFLECT
In writing 1 John, the apostle gave evidences of believers in Jesus. He also gave indications of those who are not believers. Be sure you are living so others see the right evidences in you.
RESPOND
Some say, “Judge not.” This comes from Matthew 7:1, but what cannot be judged is motives. The New Testament letters give reasons for excluding some from fellowship and that has to do with actions, not motives. 2 Timothy 3:16-17 states what the Bible is useful in doing, and it does not have to do with motives.
