READ
1 John 3:16-17
16 We know what real love is because Jesus gave up his life for us. So we also ought to give up our lives for our brothers and sisters. 17 If someone has enough money to live well and sees a brother or sister in need but shows no compassion—how can God’s love be in that person?
People talk about love, but what is “real love”? John explains Jesus revealed what it is by giving His life for us. We cannot die to atone for someone’s sin, but we can demonstrate our love in other ways. Notice that love is shown by what one does, not just by what an individual says. The only way love can be shown is by what a person does to express it.
REFLECT
Think not only of what Jesus did for you by dying on the cross in your place but also in providing abundant life for you. He has paid the penalty for your sins and has broken the power of sin over you so you are free to live a victorious Christian life.
RESPOND
With your friend talk about how God revealed His love for you. Return to the familiar verse of John 3:16 and notice that God “loved” and “gave.” Talk about what the two of you are doing to demonstrate Christian love to others.
