1 John – Week 9 – Day 2

READ

1 John 5:6-8

6 And Jesus Christ was revealed as God’s Son by his baptism in water and by shedding his blood on the cross—not by water only, but by water and blood. And the Spirit, who is truth, confirms it with his testimony. 7 So we have these three witnesses— 8 the Spirit, the water, and the blood—and all three agree.

Many at the time John wrote 1 John thought that the “Christ” came on Jesus at His baptism but left before He went to the cross. That group was known as the “Gnostics.” They thought that the deity of Christ did not die at the cross; only the human Jesus did. Had Jesus not been fully God His death would not have benefitted all mankind; if He were not fully human, He could not have died. His physical death on the cross is an important part of the gospel.

REFLECT

Think about the holiness and majesty of God and all He has done for you. Consider also about Jesus being fully human so He knows all you experience.

RESPOND

Read John 19:31-37 to learn what occurred when Jesus was crucified. Read also Hebrews 12:1-4 to see that Jesus endured all this because of the joy awaiting Him.
