1 John – Week 9 – Day 4

1 John 5:11-13 

11 And this is what God has testified: He has given us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. 12 Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have God’s Son does not have life. 13 I have written this to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, so that you may know you have eternal life. 

Some do not believe what God has testified. What is the record of what His testimony is? It is that He has given us eternal life that is found in His only Son. Whoever believes in the Son has life; they who do not have the Son in this sense do not have eternal life. John wrote this so people could be certain whether or not they have eternal life.  

REFLECT 

Have you known of some who, when asked if they have eternal life, might say, “I hope so.” Verse 12 in this passage says one can know for sure: If one has the Son, he has life. 

RESPOND 

1 John 5:11-13 is a key passage revealing how one can be sure of having eternal life. You can encourage people to have this life by receiving the Son of God by believing in Him as Savior. Emphasize to others that the only way one can have the Son is by believing in Him as Savior.
