READ
1 Thessalonians 3:1-3
1 Finally, when we could stand it no longer, we decided to stay alone in Athens, 2 and we sent Timothy to visit you. He is our brother and God’s co-worker in proclaiming the Good News of Christ. We sent him to strengthen you, to encourage you in your faith, 3 and to keep you from being shaken by the troubles you were going through. But you know that we are destined for such troubles.
Paul had told the believers in Thessalonica how much he missed them and prayed for them. Timothy had been sent to them to learn of their circumstances and to spiritually strengthen and encourage them. These believers were experiencing persecution because of their faith in the Lord Jesus. Paul reminded them that believers are “destined for such troubles.”
REFLECT
Have you experienced troubles and opposition since you trusted in Jesus as your Savior? That is to be expected. Unbelievers do not have to worry about being persecuted for what they believe.
RESPOND
Notice in this passage of 1 Thessalonians 3:1-3 the importance of following up those who have trusted in Jesus. They need encouragement and spiritual strengthening when tough times come. With your friend, read 2 Timothy 3:11-13 to see what Paul wrote there about persecution for believers.
