READ
1 Thessalonians 5:19-22
19 Do not stifle the Holy Spirit. 20 Do not scoff at prophecies, 21 but test everything that is said. Hold on to what is good. 22 Stay away from every kind of evil.
The Holy Spirit lives in every believer. To “stifle” Him is to fail to do what He urges you to do. The inspired prophecies are in the Bible so the way believers today do not scoff at them is to be engaged in the Bible. Believers are not to be gullible—they are to test messages to see if they line up with the Scriptures. There are various kinds of evil and believers should stay away from every kind.
REFLECT
Are you following the urges you feel coming from the Holy Spirit to witness to someone? Are you engaged in reading or listening to the Bible at least four times each week? Are you wise about what messengers you listen to and ministries you support?
RESPOND
With your disciple, read Acts 17:11 and Ephesians 4:30-32. Both passages tell about being wise about what Bible teaching one believes and also about not grieving the Holy Spirit.
