READ
1 Timothy 5:23
23 Don’t drink only water. You ought to drink a little wine for the sake of your stomach because you are sick so often.
This verse has caused many differences of opinion. It seems, however, that Paul was saying more about the water Timothy had been drinking than about the wine. In Bible times, wine was only fermented grape juice and was low in alcoholic content. It was often diluted with up to three parts water.
REFLECT
What is the water like where you live? One must be careful with alcoholic beverages. If there would be a predisposition to addiction it could be bad for the person’s life, family and friends.
RESPOND
For an indication of the low alcoholic content of what they were drinking in Bible times, read Acts 2:13-15. See Peter’s answer when he and the group were accused of being drunk when they were speaking in tongues.
