READ
1 Timothy 6:4-5
4 Anyone who teaches something different is arrogant and lacks understanding. Such a person has an unhealthy desire to quibble over the meaning of words. This stirs up arguments ending in jealousy, division, slander, and evil suspicions. 5 These people always cause trouble. Their minds are corrupt, and they have turned their backs on the truth. To them, a show of godliness is just a way to become wealthy.
Paul was giving instructions that came from the Lord so he commented about those who disagree with the teaching. Some people like to “quibble over the meaning of words.” Because of what such an attitude produces, Paul said, “These people always cause trouble.” Paul considers them hypocrites because “to them, a show of godliness is just a way to become wealthy.”
REFLECT
Are you more concerned about knowing the truth than getting caught up in word battles with someone? Some arguments have no end.
RESPOND
Read James 2:2-4 to see what James says about showing favoritism to the rich. Be on guard for those who have “a show of godliness [as] just a way to become wealthy.”
