READ
1 Timothy 2:1-2
1 I urge you, first of all, to pray for all people. Ask God to help them; intercede on their behalf, and give thanks for them. 2 Pray this way for kings and all who are in authority so that we can live peaceful and quiet lives marked by godliness and dignity.
Paul’s command was to pray for “all” people. This includes those you agree with and those with whom you disagree. You are not only to pray for them but also to “give thanks for them.” The reason to pray for those in authority is so believers can “live peaceful and quiet lives marked by godliness and dignity.” Remember, this was written in the days of the unfriendly Roman Empire.
REFLECT
Even though it may be more difficult to pray for those who disagree with you, take Paul’s advice and see if it makes a difference in your own life.
RESPOND
With your friend, read Romans 13:1-5 to see what Paul said about the governing authorities of the Roman Empire. Read also Acts 4:18-20 to see how Peter and John responded when they were told not to speak any more about Jesus. The believer obeys the government if it does not go against God’s commands.
