1 Timothy 2:11-14
11 Women should learn quietly and submissively. 12 I do not let women teach men or have authority over them. Let them listen quietly. 13 For God made Adam first, and afterward he made Eve. 14 And it was not Adam who was deceived by Satan. The woman was deceived, and sin was the result.
Paul wrote that women were to “learn quietly and submissively.” They are also not to lord it over the men in the church assembly. This does not mean that women are inferior; only that they rank under the Christian men in the local assembly. Paul’s reasons were: man’s priority—Adam was created first, and he was not deceived as was the woman. Adam was not deceived, but sinned knowingly. He chose to go his own way instead of God’s way and poisoned the human race with sin that affected all of his descendants.
REFLECT
Christian women are not inferior to Christian men as they are both equal before God. It is a matter of ranking. 1 Corinthians 11:3 reveals that even the Son of God ranks under the heavenly Father. The Son is not inferior; it is only a matter of rank.
RESPOND
Are you and your friend a part of a local assembly of believers? On debatable issues, the leadership needs to seek to lead the fellowship in what the practice should be. Women have many talents to offer and extremes on this passage should be avoided. Pray for harmony in the group or groups you attend. Remember what Jesus said in John 13:34-35.
