READ
1 Timothy 3:2
2 So a church leader must be a man whose life is above reproach. He must be faithful to his wife. He must exercise self-control, live wisely, and have a good reputation. He must enjoy having guests in his home, and he must be able to teach.
This begins the qualifications for an overseer. This passage refers to his domestic role and his personal life. When choosing an overseer, some churches ask businesses in the area about the reputation of the candidate being considered. He should enjoy having guests in his home. As an overseer, he must be able to teach when called on. As a leader he is considered a representative of the church.
REFLECT
Were you aware previously that this passage is the one that gives the qualifications for overseers in the local church? Some do not know where to look in the Bible for these qualifications.
RESPOND
Consider each qualification mentioned in verse 2. If you desire the position of overseer, do you have these qualifications?
