READ
1 Timothy 3:3-5
3 He must not be a heavy drinker or be violent. He must be gentle, not quarrelsome, and not love money. 4 He must manage his own family well, having children who respect and obey him. 5 For if a man cannot manage his own household, how can he take care of God’s church?
Wine in biblical times was fermented grape juice and the alcoholic content was not as high as in wine today. In addition to that it was diluted with at least three parts water. Also, the overseer is not to be argumentative and is not to love money. Evidence that he can manage the affairs of a church well is how he manages his own family.
REFLECT
Do these qualifications seem too difficult for overseers to meet? This significant position has much responsibility so the requirements are high.
RESPOND
Read 1 Timothy 6:9-11 to see the counsel Paul gave Timothy about money. Someone who is too concerned about money may hinder the work of faith in a local church.
