READ
1 Timothy 4:10
10 This is why we work hard and continue to struggle, for our hope is in the living God, who is the Savior of all people and particularly of all believers.
Because godliness has benefits not only for this life but also for the life to come, Paul explains that is why he and other believers “continue to struggle” or “strive” to do better. The reason the goal is appropriate is because their hope is in the living God. Notice how he describes God: He “is the Savior of all people and particularly of all believers.” He is the Savior of all in that Jesus’ death on the cross made salvation available to all people. He is Savior “particularly of all believers” in that only those who trust in Him for salvation become right with God.
REFLECT
Think how wonderful it is that the death of Jesus on the cross made salvation available to everyone. Then think how special it is for those who trust in Him as Savior to benefit from His work on the cross.
RESPOND
That Jesus’ death on the cross made salvation available to all is seen in 1 John 2:1-2. To see that these benefits are applied only to those who trust in Him for salvation, read John 3:16-18.
