READ
1 Timothy 5:3-4
3 Take care of any widow who has no one else to care for her. 4 But if she has children or grandchildren, their first responsibility is to show godliness at home and repay their parents by taking care of them. This is something that pleases God.
Paul told Timothy the church is to care for the widow “who has no one else to care for her.” If she has no relatives to care for her, then the church should do so. If there are relatives, however, they have the responsibility to help her. Even unbelievers see the need for this, and it is something believers can do and know it “is something that pleases God.”
REFLECT
How is your church doing in taking care of widows who have no relative to help them?
RESPOND
Read James 1:27 about what James said is the evidence of “pure and genuine religion.” Talk with a Christian friend about how this might be better carried out in your church and by you.
