Slandering the Truth
READ
2 Peter 2:2-3
2 Many will follow their evil teaching and shameful immorality. And because of these teachers, the way of truth will be slandered. 3 In their greed they will make up clever lies to get hold of your money. But God condemned them long ago, and their destruction will not be delayed.
Peter continued to describe what false teachers do. Regrettably, many are gullible and follow their false teaching. Notice the motive behind most false teaching: greed. It is often accompanied with immorality. God has condemned such behavior and the false teachers can be sure of their destruction.
REFLECT
Are you careful about giving money to preachers whom you do not know personally? You should be. With a little effort it’s not hard to find a safe place for you to give.
RESPOND
Join with a friend in reading 2 Timothy 2:15-18. The false teachers claimed the resurrection was already past. If you believed that just think how you would feel if you had missed the resurrection described in 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18. No wonder this caused people to give up on the faith. This shows what false teaching can do.
