2 Peter 2:4-5
4 For God did not spare even the angels who sinned. He threw them into hell, in gloomy pits of darkness, where they are being held until the day of judgment. 5 And God did not spare the ancient world—except for Noah and the seven others in his family. Noah warned the world of God’s righteous judgment. So God protected Noah when he destroyed the world of ungodly people with a vast flood.
Peter listed some examples to show how God judges unbelievers as He would the false teachers. He referred to the angels who sinned. Some who followed Satan in his fall are free to be demons. These mentioned in this passage are confined in a place called Tarturos, which is a word used only here in the New Testament. It is likely referred to in Jude 1:6 and perhaps refers to those in Genesis 6:1-2. The Greek word used for “flood” in verse 5 is kataklusmon, from which the English word “cataclysm” is derived.
REFLECT
Do these examples assure you that God will eventually judge false teachers?
RESPOND
Those who defy God will someday stand before Him to be judged. See Hebrews 9:27 in this regard. There may be second chances in this life to trust in Jesus, but there will be no other chance after death. For the final destiny of all unbelievers of all time, see Revelation 20:13-15.
