The Righteousness of Lot
READ
2 Peter 2:6-8
6 Later, God condemned the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah and turned them into heaps of ashes. He made them an example of what will happen to ungodly people. 7 But God also rescued Lot out of Sodom because he was a righteous man who was sick of the shameful immorality of the wicked people around him. 8 Yes, Lot was a righteous man who was tormented in his soul by the wickedness he saw and heard day after day.
Peter continues to list examples of God judging unrighteous people and cities. The cities of Sodom and Gomorrah were turned “into heaps of ashes.” They were an example of God’s judgment on the ungodly. God’s mercy and grace were seen in rescuing Lot from the city of Sodom before judgment fell. This passage refers to Lot as “a righteous man who was tormented in his soul by the wickedness he saw and heard day after day.”
REFLECT
Is your soul tormented by the wickedness you see around you? It should be.
RESPOND
Take the time with a friend to read Genesis 19:1-29 that tells the story of Lot and Sodom. Perhaps in your reading you can take turns reading every other verse. This passage is the basis for what Peter wrote about in 2 Peter 2:6-8.
