2 Peter 3:11-13
11 Since everything around us is going to be destroyed like this, what holy and godly lives you should live, 12 looking forward to the day of God and hurrying it along. On that day, he will set the heavens on fire, and the elements will melt away in the flames. 13 But we are looking forward to the new heavens and new earth he has promised, a world filled with God’s righteousness.
Eventually all material things will burn up. The “heavens” referred to would be the atmospheric heavens and perhaps even the stellar heavens. The third heaven is God’s abode and nothing will change that. That which is destroyed will be replaced by the “new heavens and new earth.” In contrast to the world today, the new heavens and earth will be “filled with God’s righteousness.”
REFLECT
Notice that knowing about these future events should motivate believers today to live “holy and godly lives.”
RESPOND
Visit with a friend about the need to live a godly life because of what the Lord tells us will occur in the future. Believers today need to live with eternity’s values in view. That which is spiritual has eternal value; that which is material has only temporal value.
