READ
2 Timothy 1:5-7
5 I remember your genuine faith, for you share the faith that first filled your grandmother Lois and your mother, Eunice. And I know that same faith continues strong in you. 6 This is why I remind you to fan into flames the spiritual gift God gave you when I laid my hands on you. 7 For God has not given us a spirit of fear and timidity, but of power, love, and self-discipline.
Timothy was blessed to have a godly grandmother and mother. Paul was confident the same genuine faith was in Timothy as they had molded his life and he had trusted in Jesus as his Savior. Paul wanted Timothy to keep his spiritual gift burning brightly for God. The laying on of hands was done in the Old Testament to identify a person with a sacrifice. Today such is done as a group recognizes one is called to the ministry and they lay hands on him to identify with what God has done in his life.
REFLECT
Do you have parents who love Jesus? If not do you have grandparents or other ancestors who were followers of Jesus?
RESPOND
Talk with a friend about some who do not have those before them who believed in Jesus. This causes some to feel lesser than those who have had godly ancestors. Remind such people about Abraham whose ancestors were idol worshipers. See Joshua 24:2-3 and think how God used Abraham in spite of his ancestry.
