READ
2 Timothy 2:5-7
5 And athletes cannot win the prize unless they follow the rules. 6 And hardworking farmers should be the first to enjoy the fruit of their labor. 7 Think about what I am saying. The Lord will help you understand all these things.
Paul was well acquainted with the Greek games of his day. He knew athletes had to follow the rules in order to be qualified for a prize. So also in the Christian life, not honoring the Lord in one’s life can cause one to lose eternal rewards. The farmer needs to benefit from his crops so he could afford to benefit others and plant another crop.
REFLECT
As a good athlete, do you seek to keep spiritual rules by the way you live?
RESPOND
Talk with another friend about what Paul wrote in 1 Corinthians 9:24-27 about himself. Read also Ephesians 4:25-32 to see a pattern to live by. See also Colossians 3:18-25 about Christian households and employees. The Old Testament law is not binding on believers today but there are rules of conduct to be followed.
