2 Timothy – Week 3 – Day 5

READ

2 Timothy 2:14

14 Remind everyone about these things, and command them in God’s presence to stop fighting over words. Such arguments are useless, and they can ruin those who hear them.

The word “remind” is from a Greek tense that expresses continuous action. Paul told Pastor Timothy to keep reminding people to stop having word battles. They were apparently having arguments over technical but unimportant matters. They could also have been arguing about something spiritual that the Bible does not address. Paul said these arguments were “useless” and could be ruinous to the listeners.

REFLECT

Think about what you would say if someone wants to argue over some unimportant minor point.

RESPOND

Talk with a friend about how to answer when a person speaks about something you are sure the Bible does not address. You could ask, “Where in the Bible does it say that?” If it is a question about something you don’t think the Bible comments about, you could say, “I don’t know where in the Bible I would go to look for an answer to that.” Make it clear that if the Bible does not take a position on what is being discussed, you shouldn’t either.
