READ
2 Timothy 4:11-13
11 Only Luke is with me. Bring Mark with you when you come, for he will be helpful to me in my ministry. 12 I sent Tychicus to Ephesus. 13 When you come, be sure to bring the coat I left with Carpus at Troas. Also bring my books, and especially my papers.
Luke the physician was the only person with Paul. When Paul later wrote that no one stood with him (v. 16), it likely means no one who had the qualifications to stand before the Roman court to defend him. Mark had been the reason Paul and Barnabas separated after their first missionary journey. Mark had deserted them on that trip (see Acts 15:36-41). As he wrote, Paul’s fellowship with Mark had been restored. It was cool in the Roman dungeon and Paul asked Timothy to bring his coat. Paul wanted to keep his mind busy so he wanted his books and “papers,” which was likely parchment that was used for writing in those days.
REFLECT
Does this give you additional insight into Paul’s life when he was facing death?
RESPOND
Consider others today who have been imprisoned. Many find Jesus there. Be sure to welcome such believers into your fellowship when they are released.
