Backed by the King: Shifting from Performance to Authority

For many of us, the idea of "sharing our faith" feels like being asked to walk onto a stage without a script. We feel the weight of the mission, but we also feel an intense pressure to perform. We worry about having the right answers, the right personality, or the right timing. We treat the Great Commission like a risky volunteer project where the success depends entirely on our own abilities.

But as Arnie Cole and missions leader Roy Moran discussed recently on the Spiritually Fit Today podcast, this "performance trap" is actually a misunderstanding of how the mission works. If you are waiting until you feel "ready" or "talented enough" to make a disciple, you might be waiting forever. The key isn't your personal power; it’s His absolute authority.

The Foundation: All Authority

Our memory verse for the week, Matthew 28:18-19, begins with a statement that changes everything: "Then Jesus came to them and said, 'All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples...'"

Notice the "therefore." The command to go is directly linked to the fact that Jesus reigns. As Roy points out, our confidence isn't found in our personality; it’s found in His position. When you speak about Jesus, you aren't representing yourself; you are an ambassador of the King of the Universe.

When we focus on our performance, we live in "quiet fear." We wonder: What if they reject me? What if I look foolish? But when we focus on His authority, we move toward "obedient courage."

In the spiritual fitness journey, we have to realize that we aren't the ones "closing the deal." Our job is to be obedient; the results belong to the One who holds all authority. As Acts 1:8 promises, "But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses." The power is a gift, not something you have to manufacture.

The Presence: You Are Never Alone

The Great Commission is bookended by two massive truths. It starts with His authority and ends with His presence. Jesus concludes the commission by saying, "And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age" (Matthew 28:20).

Sharing your faith isn't a solo mission. Jesus isn't a general sitting in a distant headquarters sending you into a danger zone; He is the Captain who is leading the charge right beside you. When you step out in faith, you are stepping into a space where Jesus is already working.

This week, we are challenging you to move away from the "Great Omission" and back into the Great Commission. Use this prayer as you start your day:

"Lord, I pray that you will keep me on the front lines of the spiritual battlefield today. Open doors I could never open, and give me the courage to walk through them."

When you pray this, "buckle up!" God will answer that prayer by providing "Holy Spirit opportunities"—moments where His authority meets someone else's need. Your job is simply to show up and speak with love in your voice.

A Final Encouragement

People matter. Your neighbors, your coworkers, and your friends are worth the risk. But remember: it’s not a risk when you’re backed by the King. You have the authority of heaven behind you and the presence of Christ beside you.

Reader FAQ

Q1: What if I don't know enough Bible verses to answer tough questions?

A: You don't need to be a theologian to be a witness. A witness simply tells what they have seen and heard. Share your story of what Jesus has done for you, and rely on His authority to speak to their hearts.

Q2: How do I tell the difference between "pushing" and "being obedient"?

A: Obedience is usually marked by love and sensitivity to the Holy Spirit. If you are praying for "love in your voice," you will find that doors open naturally rather than being forced.

Q3: I’ve tried sharing before and was rejected. What now?

A: Remember, they aren't rejecting you; they are interacting with the message of Jesus. Even Jesus experienced rejection. Your success is measured by your obedience, not by the other person's immediate reaction.

Q4: Does "all authority" mean God will make everyone listen to me?

A: It means that God is in control of the outcome and that He has the power to change hearts. It gives us the confidence to speak, knowing that God is working behind the scenes in ways we cannot see.
