Confident in the Truth - March 30

Read Psalm 119:159-160, 165

Consider how I love your precepts! Give me life according to your steadfast love. The sum of your word is truth, and every one of your righteous rules endures forever…Great peace have those who love your law; nothing can make them stumble.

Reflect

Is truth relative or absolute? Subjective or objective? Why do you think so?

The world is experiencing a truth crisis. We hear expressions like, “That’s my truth” which implies that one person’s truth may be different from everyone else’s truth. But in order for truth to be true, it can’t be contradictory. So, whose truth is actually true?

And then there’s all of that tricky Orwellian “doublespeak.” George Orwell described this term in his fictional book 1984. It’s a linguistic technique that uses euphemisms and purposely vague language to make it easier to deceive people. But it’s actually not all that fictional. We see it in the headlines every day. For example, abortion is disguised as “women’s reproductive rights” or as “women’s healthcare.” While that makes it sound like a good thing, an innocent baby still dies. That’s the disguised reality.

Growing up in such a confused world is creating confused kids (and adults, for that matter). No wonder we are experiencing a mental health crisis, especially among our teens. We are chipping away at the foundation of reality and wondering why everyone is anxious and unstable. It’s because we are no longer confident in the truth.

But if you want to discover the truth about reality, it’s as easy as opening your Bible. In today’s verses, the psalmist declared that God’s Word is true—all of it. Even better, His truth never changes. Because it’s true and unchanging, it provides peace and stability to those who love it.

Whenever I listen to the news or scroll social media, I wonder if I am getting the whole truth…or if I’m getting any truth at all. But when I open up His Word, I am confident that I’m getting the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth. Then, I look at the world through the lens of Scripture and find that it all makes much more sense. If I know His Word and obey it, I can face the world with the confidence that I will not stumble. His Word is my sure-footing. It’s the solid foundation that everything else builds on.

Remember Jesus’ parable about the wise man and the foolish man (Matthew 7:24-27)? The wise man built His house on a rock, a solid foundation. But the foolish man built his house on the sand which shifts and sinks. Jesus identified the wise man as “everyone then who hears these words of mine and does them.”

When we know, trust, and obey God’s Word, we can walk surefootedly in the knowledge of truth with a firm grip on reality. We don’t have to fear that the storms of life will send the world as we know it crashing down. Jesus said, “If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples, and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free” (John 8:32).

If you want to be confident instead of confused, abide in God’s Word. Read it, study it, memorize it, and look at the world around you through the lens of it. Believers, we of all people should live confidently in the truth of God’s Word!

Respond

Lord, thank You for the Truth. As Jesus said, “Your Word is truth” (John 17:17). As I read Scripture, help me to understand and discern it so that I can faithfully apply it to my life. I want to walk through life confident, not confused. Amen.
