READ
Galatians 3:19-20
19 Why, then, was the law given? It was given alongside the promise to show people their sins. But the law was designed to last only until the coming of the child who was promised. God gave his law through angels to Moses, who was the mediator between God and the people. 20 Now a mediator is helpful if more than one party must reach an agreement. But God, who is one, did not use a mediator when he gave his promise to Abraham.
Paul addressed what the purpose of the law was. In the case of the Mosaic law, God used Moses as a mediator because more than one party was involved. The Abrahamic covenant involved only one person—God Himself. Because of this there was no need for a mediator. The Jews who knew their history should have known this.
REFLECT
Think how wonderful it is that God bound only Himself to the promises made to Abraham in Genesis.
RESPOND
For the history of the Abrahamic covenant and to see that no mediator was needed, read Genesis 15:8-20. This passage reveals the custom of making a covenant that would bind both parties, but only God passed between the animals cut in half. This passage also gives the dimensions of the land that the Jewish people would inherit.
