Genesis Part 1 - Week 11

Day 1

READ

Genesis 5:1-2

1 This is the written account of the descendants of Adam. When God created human beings, he made them to be like himself. 2 He created them male and female, and he blessed them and called them “human.”

God created the animals but only humans were made “like himself”; in His image. He only created male and female. Those who say there are more genders than male and female do not believe in God and they want to decide what He decided long ago. They think He did not do it correctly.

REFLECT

Do you know of some who think there are more than two genders? What source of authority do they cite for such a belief? You are able to cite the creator Himself.

RESPOND

To know what happens when people are not thankful and reject the creator’s account of what He did, read Romans 1:18-32. Notice that they are without excuse.

Day 2

READ

Genesis 5:3-5

3 When Adam was 130 years old, he became the father of a son who was just like him—in his very image. He named his son Seth. 4 After the birth of Seth, Adam lived another 800 years, and he had other sons and daughters. 5 Adam lived 930 years, and then he died.

This passage includes the ages of the key people in this genealogy. Some wonder if the years were of a different length then than now. When the worldwide flood is mentioned later, it will be seen why these long ages became shorter ones. The first man God created lived 930 years. This is nearly as long as the oldest person lived. That person will be mentioned later.

REFLECT

Whatever your age, as a believer in Jesus you should live to please Him every day no matter how much time He gives you on earth.

RESPOND

Talk with a Christian friend about the need to live each day to please Jesus. See 1 Thessalonians 4:1-3 for what the apostle Paul told the believers in Thessalonica.

Day 3

READ

Genesis 5:6-11

6 When Seth was 105 years old, he became the father of Enosh. 7 After the birth of Enosh, Seth lived another 807 years, and he had other sons and daughters. 8 Seth lived 912 years, and then he died. 9 When Enosh was 90 years old, he became the father of Kenan. 10 After the birth of Kenan, Enosh lived another 815 years, and he had other sons and daughters. 11 Enosh lived 905 years, and then he died.

As you read this portion of Scripture, remember that the word “father” can also simply mean “ancestor.” Let the point also be understood that no matter how long these people lived, they all died. The reason is cited in Romans 5:12. This sobering truth can be used as you talk to others about Jesus—someday we will all be in eternity.

REFLECT

Do you live with eternity’s values in view? Is it comforting to know that, as a believer in Jesus, you will someday be with Him?

RESPOND

Talk with a friend about some Bible verses that can be used in ministering to others, no matter what their age might be. Reminding others that someday everyone will be in eternity, quote what Jesus said in John 11:25. You can also remind them that the last breath on earth will be the first breath in heaven for all who have believed in Jesus no matter how much you wish to remain on earth as did the apostle Paul (see Philippians 1:23-24).

Day 4

READ

Genesis 5:12-17

12 When Kenan was 70 years old, he became the father of Mahalalel. 13 After the birth of Mahalalel, Kenan lived another 840 years, and he had other sons and daughters. 14 Kenan lived 910 years, and then he died. 15 When Mahalalel was 65 years old, he became the father of Jared. 16 After the birth of Jared, Mahalalel lived another 830 years, and he had other sons and daughters. 17 Mahalalel lived 895 years, and then he died.

Again it stands out to see that those who were various years old, all died. This is a truth not understood by many people who do not even want to think about death. For some there may not be time to think about whether they will believe in Jesus or not. An accident may snap them into eternity and not give them any time to think about their eternal destiny.

REFLECT

Do these comments give you ideas about the way you can talk to others about salvation in Jesus?

RESPOND

Discuss with a believer some verses to be used in urging a person to trust in Jesus. For those who want to put off the decision, you could use 2 Corinthians 6:2. You could also cite examples in the news about those times when people lost their lives with no opportunity to think about their future. For those who think their good deeds will pave the way to heaven, you could use Ephesians 2:8-9.

Day 5

READ

Genesis 5:18-24

18 When Jared was 162 years old, he became the father of Enoch. 19 After the birth of Enoch, Jared lived another 800 years, and he had other sons and daughters. 20 Jared lived 962 years, and then he died. 21 When Enoch was 65 years old, he became the father of Methuselah. 22 After the birth of Methuselah, Enoch lived in close fellowship with God for another 300 years, and he had other sons and daughters. 23 Enoch lived 365 years, 24 walking in close fellowship with God. Then one day he disappeared, because God took him.

It is mentioned of Jared that he lived 962 years. This is almost as old as the oldest man who lived. His name is also mentioned in these verses. Do you know who it is yet? Notice about Enoch that he was “walking in close fellowship with God” and “one day he disappeared, because God took him.” This does not occur with everyone who walks closely with God. The same will be said of Noah later, but God did not take him to heaven; He gave him a job to do.

REFLECT

As a believer in Jesus, do you realize God has left you on earth at the present time to do a work for Him?

RESPOND

According to 1 Corinthians 12:7, every believer has been given a gift to “help each other.” You may not know what your gift is, but you should seek to help others in any way you can. In the process you will likely discover that one thing you do seems to help others in ways your other acts of service do not. This may be your gift.
