Jesus - The Promise Kept - March 21

Read 2 Corinthians 1:19-22

For the Son of God, Jesus Christ, whom we proclaimed among you, Silvanus and Timothy and I, was not Yes and No, but in him it is always Yes. For all the promises of God find their Yes in him. That is why it is through him that we utter our Amen to God for his glory. And it is God who establishes us with you in Christ, and has anointed us, and who has also put his seal on us and given us his Spirit in our hearts as a guarantee.

Reflect

Think about the promises of God. Which one is the most meaningful to you right now in your season of life?

The Bible is full of the promises of God. In fact, God is often referred to as the Promise Keeper. He’s the only one who is perfectly trustworthy. He never lies or changes His mind. We have the promise of His presence. He hears us when we pray and He is always with us. Jesus also promised eternal life for those who put their trust in Him. He has promised to return and when He does, we will live with Him in glorious heaven. Meanwhile, we have the Holy Spirit living in us and helping us.

When we go back to the Bible, we find many, many more promises that God made. There is no way that I could cover all of them! Regardless, today’s passage assures us that no matter how many promises God has made, all of them are “Yes” in Jesus. God doesn’t go back and forth between “yes” and “no.” He isn’t indecisive and He never breaks His Word. Theologian Dr. Warren Wiersbe put it simply in his New Testament Commentary: “Jesus Christ reveals the  promises, fulfills the promises, and enables us to claim the promises!”

John MacArthur also commented on today’s verses: “All of God’s OT and NT promises of peace, joy, love, goodness, forgiveness, salvation, sanctification, fellowship, hope, glorification, and heaven are made possible and fulfilled in Jesus Christ.” Jesus is the “Yes” and “Amen” to them all!

While there is no way we could ever talk about all of God’s promises, here’s a few more promises of God that you can rest in today and every day.

Jesus is the fulfillment of God’s promise to send One who would crush the head of the serpent. He is the Snake Crusher who defeated Satan and will destroy Him once and for all (Genesis 3:15).

God promised His peace: “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid.” (John 14:27).

He told us not to worry because He promised to provide for us: “Consider the lilies, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin, yet I tell you, even Solomon in all this glory was not arrayed like one of these. But if God so clothes the grass, which is alive in the field today, and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, how much more will he clothe you, O you of little faith? And do not seek what you are to eat and what you are to drink, nor be worried. For all the nations of the world seek after these things, and your Father knows that you need them. Instead, seek his kingdom, and these things will be added to” (Luke 12:27-31).

He promised to shelter and protect us: “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble” (Psalm 46:1).

He promised to be our strength: “He gives power to the faint, and to him who has no might he increases strength. Even youths shall faint and be weary, and young men shall fall exhausted; but they who wait for the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up on wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint” (Isaiah 40:29-31).

God has promised us all this and more. Pick a promise of God and meditate on it today. Thank God that in Christ, all of these promises are fulfilled. Yes and amen.

Respond

Lord, thank You for being constant and steadfast. I know that I can depend on You and trust in Your Word. Thank You for sending Your Son Jesus to be the fulfillment of every single one of Your promises. Help me to rest in Your promises and perfect peace. Amen.
